Anton Kannemeyer, Hentie van der Merwe, Tom Cullberg, Georgina Gratrix, Michael Taylor and Liza Grobler
Curious, Whetstone & Frankley is pleased to announce the opening of the spectacular Warren Editions, at 6pm on Wednesday 28 January. The show runs until Saturday 14 February.
Warren Editions was established by Zhané Warren late 2007, and publishes and prints original fine art prints. Fine art prints are multiple originals, not reproductions. A print often comprise of different layers, which challenges an artist to de-construct and then re-construct their own images. This process often leads to new directions in his/her general art practice.
"The professional support [of Warren Editions] provided an opportunity to truly explore some of the themes that I've been toying with over the past couple of months," says Liza Grobler, who will be showing an untitled monotype. The show also includes three works by Hentie van der Merwe, winner of the Sasol Wax Award 2008, who has done a series of monotypes and etchings, conceptually based on his music theatre project. Tom Cullberg's three etchings convey, through painstaking process, the same transience and intimacy as his paintings.
Georgina Gratrix, whose work has been acquired after her first solo show by the National Gallery, will be showing "Base" and "Techtonic" - "They’re prints about painting," she says. Anton Kannemeyer shows "H is for Hansie" and the iconic "Z is for Zuma" from his series The Alphabet of Democracy. Stellenbosch lecturer and mark-maker Michael Taylor shows monotypes "Time Machine" and "Against the Clock". Of monotype-making he says: "Nothing monotone about it… this process has reminded me about the activeness of print-making and that element of surprise that comes with drawing a translucent picture."
